Be the “Biggest Loser” in Madison

I think one of the biggest lessons I learned from watching a program like “The Biggest Loser” (on NBC), is that the journey to weight loss and staying fit is easier if you have help and support along the way. You don’t have to do it alone.

 

That’s why I chose to join a gym here in Madison. It was downright easy. I shopped around until I found one that was open 24/7 (my schedule is a little crazy and I need flexibility). I found one that offered a FREE 7-day pass, so I could get the feel of their center. I found one with a personal trainer available, in case I decided to hire one. And, I found one close to my apartment because I want to be able to get there and back quickly, spending most of the limited time I have available to go towards the workout itself.

 

I’m one of those people that get into the exercise scene much more easily if I see others working hard at it. That sure pushes me to work up a bigger sweat. I was able to meet some great people and talk with them about what routine works best for them. I don’t blame the people who come with their MPG players or are glued to one of the TV sets (they apparently need that down time), but that’s not for me. I sure like it when we can exchange ideas and have a few laughs. When I feel the support of others at the gym, it just makes me want to get back sooner and work harder.

 

I start out on the treadmill. An easy way for me to stretch out a bit and get my heart rate going. Then I move on to nine of the fitness machines both for weight loss and toning. I always feel so much better after my workout and long-term I am going to feel a whole lot better when I get the extra weight off.

 

Now, if I can only stay away from many of the junk foods out there, this process is going to go much more quickly for me. The thing I have to keep reminding myself about is how many workouts it takes to drop those empty calories I keep putting in my body. I need to avoid those foods that put me two steps back (like that hot fudge sundae before bed). You have to reward yourself once in a while, but it’s important to eat healthier overall. And I don’t mean all salads. I mean you have to make better choices like leaner cuts of mean or a baked potato (light on the toppings) in place of those french fries. Stop and think before you put any food into your mouth (are these empty calories?) and you’ll be fine.

 

One more thing, I have a friend that goes to school over at UW-Madison. He says they have an excellent fitness center on campus. So, just a side note. I you go to the university, that is yet another option available to you; a less expensive one at that.

 

For me, I soon hope to be known in Madison as the “Biggest” of the biggest losers!
