Starvation is not the way to lose weight. People often think that they have to forego the pleasure of eating in order to slim down but the truth is that you do not have to go hungry in order to shed those unwanted pounds. The key is in eating more of the right kinds of food, more often.

The sensible approach to dieting is eating satisfying meals that do not contain a lot of calories. This is the only kind of weight loss diet that nutritionists and health care practitioners recommend. Filling up your stomach with low calorie nutritious foods will increase your metabolism and provide you with the energy you need. In contrast to typical “diets”, this one will not leave you feeling weak nor will it create a feeling of deprivation which is what other diets do.

Another common diet misconception is that food that tastes good is fattening and therefore bad for you. What you really need to do is eat low-energy-density foods. Such foods make up a healthy diet program that will enable you to achieve weight loss success. New York Times bestselling writer Brenda Watson explains in her book, The Fiber 35 Diet, that fiber is the main example of a low-energy-density food. Foods like fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains are high in fiber and can easily be introduced into one’s diet.

In contrast to low-energy-density food, high-energy density food contains a lot of calories and fat per bite thus choosing the former over the latter would result in a significant change in your weight. In fact, you can lose about two-and-a-half pounds a week without working out by simply making the right food choices. In Watson’s book, she writes that three-and-a-half cups of blueberries is roughly equal (but still lesser in calories) to about one candy.

Fiber works by kicking into action weight loss promoting processes within the body. In the lower bowel, good bacteria acts upon fiber and converts it into a substance that can lower blood cholesterol and suppress the appetite. Fiber also expands in the stomach creating a feeling of fullness that lasts for a long time. This effect will enable you to lose weight more easily. Moreover, fiber is low in calories so you can eat it without worrying about caloric overload.

Aside from generating weight loss, fiber also provides numerous health benefits and unlike unnatural or artificial treatments, it is non-toxic and does not cause any harmful side-effects. Unlike nutrients such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates, fiber is indigestible. It easily passes through your digestive tract practically as is, thereby resulting in regular elimination. As fiber moves down, it also sweeps the intestinal and colon walls clean of waste and toxin build-up thus leaving your system clean and free of toxins. Indeed, regular intake of fiber promotes overall digestive health.

You can enjoy food and still lose weight with fiber. It is low in calories, highly nutritious and even great tasting. At the same time, fiber-rich foods naturally curb the appetite and remove cholesterol from the system. All these natural weight loss processes contrast sharply to the artificial and dangerous way in which prescription drugs and weight loss supplements work. If you want quality and sustainable weight loss, do it the healthy way. Feast on fiber!
